Meaning and history
Gears of War is an iconic shooter series, the first installment of which was created by Epic Games and released by Microsoft Game Studios in 2006. Gears of War was the first interactive entertainment developed in the West that managed to break into the top 10 best-selling games in Japan. The Microsoft exclusive was bought 33 thousand times, and with this result, it took the seventh place.
So, what is Gears of War? It is a classic action shooter with a third-person view in a fantastic post-apocalyptic setting. The events of all games take place on the fictional planet Sera, where people are in an eternal war with mutants, who lived underground for a long time. The plot of the game unfolds around the soldiers of the Delta Squad, defending human settlements on the planet Sera from the ruthless underground enemy – the Locust Horde. The protagonist of the game is Marcus Phoenix, a former prisoner and a battle-hardened fighter.
In Gears of War, players will have to fight monsters and spend a lot of time in hiding. In order to successfully pass the player needs to intelligently think about both shooting and moving around the shelters. The second player can join the campaign in co-op mode. The game also features several multiplayer modes for up to eight players.
By the way, at the early stages of development, the game was called Unreal Warfare and was conceived as a large-scale online action game, but at a certain point the authors looked at what they had and realized that the concept needed to be changed. As a result, there was little left of the original ideas, and Unreal Warfare turned into Gears of War.
